How to Change Water Filtration filters?
Whether you have a sediment or carbon filter, changing it is an important step in maintaining the health of your home and your family’s safety. It helps to ensure that the filter is able to do its job, removing harmful chemicals, metals, and particles from your drinking water before they enter your home.
A few simple steps can make this process easy and quick.
First, you need to determine the size of the filter you need. Check your owner’s manual or measure the existing filter to get the correct size.
Next, you need to remove the old filter and replace it with the new one. Place a bucket underneath the filter location to catch any water that may drip out during the process.
You also need to have a tool that will let you unscrew the vertical filter housings from the cap of the filter. This is called the filter wrench or strap wrench, and it is a must-have on hand for this task.
If you don’t have one, you can buy it at any hardware store. You can also use a wrench that is designed to screw into the horizontal filter housings, but this is less effective and will likely damage the O-rings in the filter housing.
The filter housing is located under the water line between the main faucet in your home and the water supply valve that feeds your filter. This device is what allows all the outlets in your home to dispense clean water.
In most cases, the water filtration filter system has 3 valves that allow you to isolate the entire system. The valves are usually simple handles that can be turned to allow or stop the flow of water.
Once you have identified the valves, turn off your incoming water supply and open a faucet downstream of each valve to release any pressure in the line. This will help you drain out any debris water that can get trapped in the lines.
Now, you need to carefully unscrew the housings by hand and remove the old filter. If you have a wrench that is specifically made for the purpose, it will be much easier to do this.
The filter will now be in the sump, so you should take your time to ensure that it is seated securely. Some filters are a little stiff and may need a small amount of lubrication to help them seat correctly.
Before tightening, you should run some plumber’s silicon grease around the o-ring seal in the sump. This will help it seat properly and prevent the o-ring from leaking when you tighten it.
Once the new filter is in place, you should line up the sump with the filter head and screw it back on. Tighten it by hand, turning it clockwise. Once it is secure, you can put your filter back into its place and close the water valve feeding it.
